Cosplay Review: Daenerys Targaryen Wig from Cosplay Sky

Daenerys Targaryen wedding dress costumeThe Game of Thrones Daenerys Targaryen Cosplay Wig from was final touch to the costume I’ve been working on the past couple months. The wig arrived in just over 2 weeks, so plan ahead when ordering! It did not disappoint and looked like the website photos right out of the package. It is reasonably priced at $39 and comes pre-styled with 2 braids. I actually removed one of the braids after I put it on because I wanted more hair around my face. The braids undid really easily and didn’t even leave the hair crimped.Daenerys Targaryen cosplay wig

The wig is very long and wavy with a nice thickness and texture. I was happy to find it did not tangle as some long wigs constantly do. The hair was easily finger-combed back into submission whenever the wind messed it up. The wig cap itself is nicely made with a skin colored top, lace mesh liner and adjustable hooks for sizing.

After wearing it on a windy day I was very happy to find it still looked nice after removing it. Longer wigs will often matte up on the under layers and are hard to untangle. This one still looked new at the end of the day. I’m very happy with this wig and look forward to wearing it again!

Fairy Maternity Costume from Costume Supercenter – a Review

Fairy Maternity Costume

Fairy Maternity Costume

I recently got to test out the Maternity Fairy Costume from Since there are so few ready-to-wear costume options for pregnant women, I wanted try out one of the few costumes I saw available. At 6 months along, I figured I would be able to fill it out pretty well!

The costume is by Rubies Costumes, item 889006, and is currently on sale for $36.54. Regular price is $42.99. It normally comes with the dress, wings and flowered headpiece, but the headpiece and wings were both missing from the package when my costume arrived. I added wings and a wig to round out the costume.

According to the sizing, Standard fits size 12-18, chest size 40-43”, hips 42-46”. Before pregnancy I was a size 4. In maternity clothes I wear a 4-6, so I’m nowhere near the 12-18 quoted on there but the costume fit quite well. It would not fit on anyone much bigger. The elastic on the arm holes is ridiculously tight to the point where it’s painful. If I were to wear this for an extended period of time, I’d cut the elastic.

The costume mostly looks like the photo on the package, except the ribbon detailing on the front is missing the woven design across the chest. The fabric actually looks nicer than it does in the photo, with varying shades of pink and a crinkled texture. The sleeves are nice and flowy and there is plenty of room in the belly area. There’s a ribbon to tie under your bust to give your shape some definition, which is nice.

Overall it’s a decent and comfortable maternity costume (as long as your’s comes with all the pieces), though you don’t really need to be pregnant to wear it. The babydoll dress shape would work just fine on non-pregnant women as well.

Spooky Yellow Cat Contact Lens Review

Spooky Yellow Cat Contact Lenses

Spooky Yellow Cat Contact Lenses sent me some Spooky Yellow Cat Contact Lenses to try out this month. The Spooky Eyes lenses come little individual blister packs so you will need to have your own case and lens solution ready for storing them. They are sold as a pair for $24 and have a 90 day life span once

The Yellow Cats are a yellow lens with vertical black pupil. They went in easily but it takes a little practice to get them straight up and down. I recommend getting pretty comfortable sticking your finger in your eye because you will spend a lot of time adjusting them. They tend to float sideways a lot at first. I found later they seem to settle in and stay put. This is pretty normal and every pair of “cat eye” style contact lenses I’ve tried has a tendency to shift around a bit. You can tell when it’s shifting because your vision changes a bit. I got pretty good at adjusting it without even looking in a mirror!

These are a great finishing touch for a creepy cat Halloween costume.

Product review: Green Circle Lenses by Spooky Eyes

I got to give the Green Sparkle Lenses by Spooky Eyes a try over the weekend at CONjure. And yes we do sell contacts in the shop, but not online and not circle lenses, so I thought it would be fun to review some for Spooky Eyes.

Circle lenses are larger than regular contacts. From Wikipedia: “The difference between the two types of lenses is that circle lens are tinted not only in areas that cover the iris of the eye, but also prominently in the extra-wide outer rim of the lens. The result is the appearance of a bigger, wider iris and create an illusion of large eyes. The optical zone in the middle is transparent and it is large enough to provide clear vision.”

The lenses from Spooky come in a little box and containers with the peel off tinfoil. They are yearly lenses, but do not come with a lens case, so you’ll need to get one of those.

Spooky Eyes contacts

I used to wear contacts, but had LASIK just over 10 years ago so I didn’t need a prescription for these. But after years of wearing lenses, I’m an expert and rarely have trouble putting in lenses. I was wondering if these would feel different because they were bigger, but they went in easy and fell into place. I tried them on a few times before the longer wearing and one time experienced a problem with blurriness and floating but it cleared up with some eye drops. It’s very important to keep your eyes hydrated!

green-sparkle-circle-lenses_1 green-sparkle-circle-lenses   I chose the Green Sparkle lenses because I thought they’d go well with my Poison  Ivy costume. But when I put them over my blue eyes, they didn’t look very bright green, more like teal almost. Because the center is so open, a lot of my blue showed through. I think it is probably a more intense color on brown eyes like shown in the sample photo.

They also did not really work for the overall look I was going for with the outfit, so I decided to wear them with my Steampunk Supergirl and go for a little lolita twist on that outfit.

My eyes are on the small side, so the contacts cover a lot of my eye. One interesting thing I found with the larger lenses was that I got less of the “tunnel vision” effect that comes with a lot of lenses. These are more open in the center so more of your pupil is exposed. I did like that aspect of them.

Blond Bombshell Cosplay Wig Review

Last week contacted me about a possible partnership doing reviews of their products. Some people may be thinking- wait…isn’t that a conflict of interest? Don’t you own a costume shop? It’s true, I do- a small one. My shop caters to more of a niche market and even I often shop in other costume stores for supplies I don’t carry or don’t want to order 10 of just so I can sell it. I just don’t have the space to carry everything! lives up to their name- they have a HUGE selection! So I thought it would be fun to test run some things I don’t carry in my store.

EnchantressI’ve been working on an Enchantress costume for DragonCon and hadn’t figured out the wig yet. I already have about 10 blond wigs, but I needed something really big and really blond to look good behind the head piece. I decided to give the Adult Bombshell Wig-Blonde a try. It looked like it had a great pouf on the crown and was nice and full.

At only $18.99 it was quite a bargain, but that also made me worried about quality. I’ve had bad experiences with cheap wigs before! I was pleasantly surprised when the wig came and looked pretty much just like the photo on the website.

The wig was bright blond, wavy, with good height at the crown and side swept bangs. The synthetic hair fibers reminded me of doll hair. They were kind of shiny and plastic looking. This wig isn’t going to fool anyone into thinking it’s your real hair, but makes a great costume wig when you aren’t looking for realism.

The wig sheds tremendously so you’ll want to shake it out and finger comb it before wearing. It looks even better after you do that. I wouldn’t recommend brushing it and stay far away from heat styling tools.

As with most inexpensive wigs, the inside is a one size non-adjustable mesh cap. So the wig takes a lot of bobby pins to anchor it in place. I have kind of a small head and it kept trying to slide right off until I anchored it down.

But overall, it was exactly what I was looking for and it will make a great addition to my costume! I snapped a quick pic in the backyard wearing my new headpiece. I still have to finish my actual costume- I just threw on a green dress for the pic.
